Onam Sadya Platter on Banana Leaf

Onam is the main Hindu festival of Kerala, Gods own country. It is the rice harvest festival when Lord Vishnu is worshipped. This festival is marked by beautiful flower carpets, 
snake boat races and vegetarian food festival which they called Sadhya which is not only a feast for stomach but also for the eyes. Vibrant Green Banana Leaf Platter laid with small portions of so many vegetarian dishes.

I have always been fascinated with Kerala, its food, the state, the culture, the Ayurveda industry, the flora and fauna and most importantly Sadhya.
I always wanted to celebrate Onam personally and visit Kerala during this season particularly to watch the boat race. 

I am posting few pictures taken of allapuzha taken during off race season and the place is breath taking spectacular.I hope to visit this place again particularly to watch the race.

Onam Sadhya is served specially on banana leaves.I have two big banana trees in my terrace garden which are full grown now.
So I used them for Sadhya. I got the saplings from Orissa,my village. Now a days It bears nice fruits. 


Whats on my Onam Platter This Time :

Steamed Rice



Aviyal (added beet root to the original recipe. Was a serious taste booster)

Semiyan Payasam (vermicelli sweet milk pudding)

Moong Daal Payasam (Recipe Below)

Pineapple Pachadi (Recipe Below)

Parippu Curry (Moong Daal Made Kerala Style)

Kottu Curry (Raw Banana cooked with coconut base dry gravy)

Cabbage Beans Thoran (added green beens too to the original recipe. Tasted better )


Recipe for Moong Daal Payasam
Ingredients:

1/4 cup moong daal
1/2 cup jaggery
2 cup milk
1/2 tsp cardamom powder
chopped dry fruits like cashew and raisins

Roast moong daal in non stick pan.
Cook with 1 glass water in pressure cooker for 2 whistles.
Allow it to cool down.
Blend with milk in a blender and cook for 2 minutes.
In the mean time, add 1/2 cup water to jaggery and cook till jaggery melts and becomes thick and golden with consistency and texture like that of honey.
Add cardamom powder
Allow it cool down.
Add this to moong daal cooked above.
Add choice of your dry fruits

Recipe of Pineapple Pachidi


Take 1 cup cooked pineapple in pressure cooker with 1/2 cup sugar and 1 cup water for 2 whistles.

Strain and 1/2 cup grated coconut
Add 1/2 cup curd
Add 1/2 cup water
Mix pineapple, grated coconut , curd, water and salt together.
Add salt and sugar to taste
Heta oil in a small temering pan.
Add mustard seeds, curry leaves , pinch of aesofitida and pinch of turmeric
Add to pineapple.
Pineapple Pachidi is ready

Recipe of Kottu Curry


2 big raw bananas peeled and cut into small pieces

Cook in boiling water with little turmeric and salt till it turns soft
Soak 1/2 cup small chana overnight and cook in pressure cooker for 25 minutes with salt and 1 glass water.
Add cooked banana to it.
Add 1/2 cup grated coconut. Bring it to boil.
Heat oil in a pan. Add green chilies, mustard seeds, cumin seeds, hing and dry red chili.
Add it to the cooked chana and banana.
Kotu curry is ready.
