Amruta Bhanda is raw papaya in Oriya. This was always my mother's favourite and made me eat all the time during exams so that I dont have my stomach upset before giving my papers and concentrate well . I try to make it even now whenever I wish to have something ultra light and healthy..
Some dishes are included in the diet just for their medicinal value .
Raw Papaya Curry is one of them, you name it and even the extremely hungry ones will turn their face away.
They would rather sleep hungry than eat this vegetable.
There are interesting ways to make people eat this vegetable like making Raw Papaya Manchurian or Raw Papaya Cutlets. However, deep frying takes away its mineral nutrient.
I tried to change the original recipe to make it little bit interesting and create a disguise by adding grated coconut, moong daal etc . It might turn 2/10 moping ones eat this vegetable even without recognizing.
Tip : When you know a person does not like a particular ingredient but is good for health, never mention the name of the dish beforehand. Instead ask to eat and guess the ingredient. Atleast a couple of morsel will makes its way to the stomach.
What You Need:
1 medium size raw papaya peeled and cut into small pieces
2 tbsp mustard oil
1 tbsp panch photan
½ cup moong daal soaked in water for 10 minutes
½ cup grated coconut
1 tsp turmeric powder
2 broken red chilies
2 broken green chilies
Few Curry leaves
Few coriander leaves chopped for garnishing
1 tsp hing
2 onions chopped
1 tbsp garlic chopped
1 tbsp roasted and powdered cumin powdered
Steps To Make:
Heat mustard oil in a kadai.
Add hing and panch photan*.
Add garlic , curry leaves and onions.
Add dry red chilies and green chilies.
Cook till onions turn pink.
Add moong daal and cook for 7-8 minutes on medium flame.
Add raw papaya pieces.
Add turmeric powder and 1 cup water.
Cover and cook for 10 minutes on low flame.
Open lid, add salt to taste, grated coconut, roasted powdered cumin powder and chopped coriander leaves.
Mix well and cook till papaya is cooked well.
Serve with Daal Tadka and Roti.
